Mukwonago History
Mukwonago was settled in the 1700s by the Potawatomi along the confluence of the Mukwonago and Fox Rivers. The Village was incorporated in 1905 and in recent years has expanded into Walworth County to the south.
Conveniently located on IH 43, Mukwonago offers a growing industrial center, a variety of housing options, and access to many natural amenities including Phantom Lake and the Vernon Wildlife Area. Mukwonago has an area of 8.2 square miles and is located about 25 miles southwest of Milwaukee.

Mukwonago is served by the Mukwonago Area School District (MASD) within Waukesha County and the East Troy Community School District within Walworth County. MASD includes one high school, one middle school, and six elementary schools.
What we offer
MASD supports leading-edge technology in the schools through science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) programs, 1:1 wireless device frameworks, and personalized learning. The Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program in the East Troy Community School District offers high school students specialized college readiness courses, and the Career and Technical Education program provides skills for the contemporary workplace. In addition, Mukwonago is served by a number of private schools and by the Mukwonago Community Library, which is a member of the Waukesha and Jefferson Counties Bridges Library System.
Numerous higher education opportunities are also available to Mukwonago residents in Waukesha County and in neighboring counties. Carroll University, a private university offering undergraduate and graduate programs, and UWM at Waukesha—a two-year campus affiliated with UW-Milwaukee—are both located in the City of Waukesha. In addition, Waukesha County Technical College (WCTC) located in Pewaukee and Gateway Technical College located in Elkorn both offer associate degrees, technical diplomas, and short-term certificates. Nearby University of Wisconsin-Whitewater offers four-year undergraduate programs as well as graduate degrees. Milwaukee County is home to 15 universities, including UW-Milwaukee, Marquette University, and the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Together, these universities offer a wide variety of undergraduate and graduate programs.
